Serious Pligg Problem That Could Broke A Poor Webmaster

Filed under: Shakk.Us, programming, technology — shakk @ 7:59 pm

Found this problem.. which is quite serious as least for me as a poor webmaster wannabe.
In the step 1 of the URL submission, it was generally a good idea to fetch some info from the destination link first and try to insert some info for the submitter, I was even thinking of adding features to auto filling in Title and tags (from Meta keywords).

Submit Step 1Then eventually when I try to submit a MP3 under my Podcast category, at first it just seems taking forever to respond and forward to step 2, I was puzzled and thinking it might be my host problem. Re-submit a couple of time and finally recall that it is the URL prefetch things! Checking on my webhost account… there was more than 100MB of downloads bandwidth wasted. :'(

Quick fixes are either:
1. Disable URL Prefetch thingy totally. ( I hope their submit without URL will be release soon)
2. Set an upper limit of bytes Pligg can download (which I'm doing now).

in your libs/link.php
function HTTPRequst->DownloadToString()

modify the while loop to

$read_count = 0;

/* modified read max 10k */
while(is_resource($this->_fp) && $this->_fp && !feof($this->_fp) && $read_count++ < 10)

So if you are running on budget webhost like me, you better fix your Pligg.

  2. I installed pligg version 8.2 beta on one of my hosting accounts on my hostgator reseller hosting acount. The site was working fine for 2 days, suddenly, the submit.php has just started getting hanged up as soon as any url is submitted either by Bookmarklet through get or through the submission form through post. I think the server is somehow barring access to fetch remote url resource. I’m new to smarty and advanced php programming, but I’ve lot of experience with wordpress hacking and development. Can you please guide me on what lines to comment up OR what to change so that pligg just stops fetching remote content to retrieve title and all.

    Please help! Thanks in advance.
    James.

  3. I guess there is an option to disable the URL checking feature in later pligg version (mine is still stuck with beta 7.

    URL checking is great to prevent spam but if it try to fetch link to some video or mp3 it will take forever.
